ok I am an american living in germany for almost two years....I am 6'3 200 lbs.....I love to ride my bike work out and play all sports including soccer (which i suk at) but its fun I always try to talk german even though its not very well, I love to laugh and do things i think is kinds strange to germans, Like wrestling with my daughters at the park...My kids love it (they are 4 & 6) I watch american football because i love it. I also do things like working with my shirt off when its hot outside, or when i am riding my bike. I wear a colts ball cap and love to grill in winter when there is ´snow on the ground. I always help out in the community with various things, I know I stand out from the typical germans obviously, but they do appreciate the help. IDK if the germans think I am crazy or just a typical ''american''. I would like to know what germans think of this because no one will come out and tell me in person because they are nice people?..I live in a small town of 600

  1. keep your shirt on whatever the weather, its gross whatever country you come from

  2. As a German living in Germany, I think your behavior is just normal (except maybe for the grilling in winter; I think Germans find that a bit strange). Contrary to what Lizzie said, working with your shirt off when it's hot also is quite normal for the typical German male.

I recently found this blog on the net, written in German by an American living in Germany; he tries to explain the differences between Americans and Germans. Reading it is fun, and it'll sure help improve your German:

  3. I worked in a law firm in Stuttgart - during a heat wave in the summer, one of the partners went shirtless - in his office - and walked around the office with his shirt off.

I'm not saying it's typical or normal even for Germans - but it isn't out of the ordinary - riding a bike is even more normal.

Germans like being naked and tolerate nakedness better than Americans - but the Colts hat??? - get a Packers hat - that goes over better every where.

  4. I, as a German not living in Germany, would say you are pretty normal.  Must be fun to have you and your family as neighbors.
