Question:

Question for MANAGERS, BOSSES AND ADMINISTRATORS?

I am working as an administrator for 1 year, at one company. One of our ex-employees asked me for recommendation.

I wonder are there any formats on it? Should it be short or long?

What if I shortly list his advantages, and it would take only one page?

Is that all right?

please help

  1. First check out your company to see if they have a policy about giving recommendations.  if they say you have free reign then write a reference then write one talking about attendance work ethic and skills

  2. 1. ask your employer about the companies policy on references.

    2. if the employer allows you to do the reference do not embellish, state facts as they are documented in the personnel file.

    3. the law in every state protects the employer as long as they are TRUTHFUL.

you can be held liable, for the information in the reference, if you fail to be totally truthful by the employee:

if you give a bad reference that was not truthful with the intent to prevent them from obtaining employment

    OR

by the recipient of the reference:

if you knowingly neglect to state relevant facts and/or lie about the employees performance to help them fraudulently obtain employment.

    4. a reference/letter of recommendation should be kept as short as possible to state the relevant information concerning past performance and prognosis of success in the new job. be specific with dates, duties, responsibilities and overall job performance.

  3. It seems that the request is more of a character reference. The company HR dept should provide references. When I recommended my friend for flat rental, I used about 3/4 of an A4.
