Question:

Question for Moms of Special Needs Grade-Schoolers ?

The first grade has recess at 11:00, lunch at 11:30 and the next snack is at 2:30pm.

My daughter is a type 1 diabetic. Three hours is too long, especially where preceded by recess (exercise). I'm drowning in anxiety over here.

Gina can have her snack at any time I tell them she has to. I can have her do this earlier. We strive to make sure she has as much normalcy as possible though. And I think anyone with a special needs child gets where I'm coming from with that. She already has to have a morning snack alone (the other kids dont get a morning break).

How unreasonable is it to ask the school to accommodate a half hour change? What can I expect for a response?

  1. It is not only reasonable, it is imperative. As a diabetic myself (and as I am sure you know), fluctuations in blood sugar can have a tremendous effect on many things.......mood, performance, awareness, alertness, etc..........and other things that you do not need reminders of.

What you should expect is for the school to be most accommodating, without any need for you to compromise at all. You are not raising the "look at me" flag in any way, shape or form! Good luck.

  2. I don't think that it is unreasonable at all for the school to accommodate the diabetic needs of your child.  Some schools leave the snack out early to allow kids to have it anytime they want.  I think that having a conversation with your teachers will prove that they will be more than understanding in this matter and will accommodate Gina.  If they do have a problem, then I would think about changing schools.  There are children that are allergic to peanuts and it is banned from some schools!  So I can't imagine how a snack in the morning will be a problem.

    Good luck!

  3. if its the 2:30 snack that your wanting moved up the half hour, thats all on the teacher herself, she will probably do for you since its for your childs health. if she cant then your daughter may be able to go to the nurses office and have a snack, the other kids dont have to know why shes leaving. good luck.
