Question for South Africans, what about the crime rate?

I'm an American--

I've been googling South Africa trying to get some info, being all the hummm about Nelson Mandela's bday, I wanted to catch up.

So what has the crime rate been like in the last 20years or so?

I hope YA doesn't erase this question--it is a question.

Well I consider myself lucky. When I lived in SA I was only burgled six times in six months.  And I was only attacked six times, in six months,  with a gun/knife at my throat. Six must have been my lucky number.

I went back to SA for a visit and what do you know, the very first supermarket I walk into, gets held up by 5 men with guns. I searched in vain to read about it in the newspaper the next day.  

South Africa  has tipped the scales. Lets not forget that even our police and traffic officers recently had a shoot out . Unheard of.

We vie with Colombia to be World's Most Dangerous Country. We have more rapes than anywhere else, and an HIV rate that is estimated at between 21% to 60% of the adult population whilst our government tell us to emigrate to Australia if we do not like it or to eat garlic and beetroot instead of taking anti-retrovirals.

Let me sum it up for you

The normal working decent citizens are living in prisons due to the criminals walking the street freely

The kill for a cellphone

The brutally murders a pregnant woman (8months)

And the list just goes on and on

There is no rate because it can't keep up with the statistics,the government will never give us the true figures,but in the past 6 months I've had 3 friends die and 2 were hijacked

I was only 4 when apartheid ended, but crime has definitely gone up--and I have noticed it too.

I mean, I dunno if you'd see this elsewhere in the world (coz I'm not sure), but in Joburg quite a few streets have their own fences and barbed wire, etc. Might as well just live in a jail.

I can't add much to what has been said but the crime rate is so high to say it is out of control is an understatement. The government is doing nothing to control it.

Mate, crime has escalated beyond all control in South Africa. Since that terrorist Mandela was released, things have become progressively worse for most South Africans, with only the previously moneyed Whites and the nouveau riche of the Blacks being able to enjoy an improved standard of living. Hordes of White professionals have left the country due to it having become practically ungovernable due to the ineptitude of the Black government that was installed in 1994 and also due to the narrow-sighted policy of affirmative action that has been enforced.

South Africa has the dubious honour of becoming the murder capital of the  World since the ANC was handed the reins and has more violent deaths daily than Iraq.
