Repeating a grade is still common in the U.S. for students who haven't made enough progress. I've read that the UK doesn't usually have kids repeat the school year. What is done with them then? Do they get assigned to classes that teach at a slower pace? I know the schools over there give kids extra help but we have that here too. But even with that, some kids still don't progress well enough. That's especially true in the early years when kids are learning to read.

I know of one 8 year old boy who had to repeat first grade (or "year 1" over there) because he could barely read. He seemed very normal socially though. The vast majority of students do just fine but then there are others that are real challenge to teach. What is done in the UK if you normally don't have kids repeat the school year?
