Question for all special educators for learning disabilities!!?

the question that really me bugs me, is why learning disabilities are considered as a part of special education course. couldnt it be a part of normal B.Ed course.like any other specilization. or should it remain a part of special education.

I dont know deeply about learning disabilities, but shouldnt every teacher be made to study these disorders in details. why is it considered as a handicap?

Please help me understand this by answering!!

  1. Children with learning disabilities need extra help that a teacher who is teaching a class full of kids may not be able to provide. Many learning disabled kids will eventually not need services and most of them spend most of the day in regular classes. My son has a learning disability. he is smart and can learn things but he needs a little extra assistance at times. he is currently on the honor role .


  2. i believe the reason why they are separated is so the rest of the class doesn't get left behind -

    depending on which learning disability you are talking about- some disabilities may never allow a student to preform as well as their peers- some like the loss of hearing require a different focus in the class room. and some like ADD require only some time out of the regular classroom for help in the areas that they need it most

    my cousin is deaf- he was eventually 'mainstreamed' into regular classrooms in most subjects but English classes and writing skills still required some help that his peers would have already known just from their ability to hear and speak

    I'm not really sure what you were looking for with this question but I hope this was helpful- everyone learns at a different pace- the students who learn faster have to wait for everyone else to catch up- the students who have a harder time understanding sometimes get left behind academically- when you throw 30 children into a classroom- you can't cater to all of them at once- the ones that have an inability to learn most things at the same rate as their peers usually get separated into a different class room

  3. It was a normal part of my BEd course at Bangor, I only graduated two years ago.  They didn't discuss them in detail but we had a couple of lecures on each 'disability' and a reading list if we were interested so it was more in our own hands.  

    I've always thought of it like this: an 'ability' is something people can do which is advantageous to them, but 'disablity' is the same but disadvantageous.

    I think to be honest they're trying to lose the 'special' when it comes to SEN, but that was a few years ago now and nothing seems to have changed.  I think it's labelled in such a way purely because people with learning disabilities need more guidance and attention because now with all this inclusion malarky there is a greater variety of SEN children in every classroom.

    One thing that impressed me in my school was that the pupils in the class tend to help out and in a way 'teach' the children with special needs themselves and it works because sometimes hey can find an easier way of explaining what you're trying to put across and at the same time reinforce what they have learned by teaching to others.

  4. To simplify my answer, for a disability to be part of a special education course it should affect the child's 3 areas in life: cognitive, socialization and perceptive. If it does affect the 3 then it is needed to be for special focus and attention to help the child be fitted in a normal setting.

  5. I just graduated as a special education teacher in December.  When I started my college career all of the teachers were together and had to learn some about all of the disability catigories.  Most schools have every teacher learn about disabilities but only go into great detail with the special education teachers.  

    Each child with a disability is supposed to be in their least restrictive environment as far as education.  For many that means in a typical classroom with the typical students so every teacher should know how to handle students with disabilities.
