I am a new puppy owner (she is 10 weeks old) and was just informed by my vet that bichons can be very stubborn and difficult to potty train. Does anyone have any advice specific to Bichons and at what age can I hope to have her house trained? By the way, currently I have been crate training her when I am gone (less than 2 hours at a time) and putting her in paper lined room at night with her bed. I tried crating her at night and was having to wake up every 2 to 3 hours to take her outside - this is not an option as I need to sleep. I give her tons of praise and a treat every time she pees or poops outside and when she does inside I say "no" while she is doing it and put her outside for about 5 minutes.

  1. Giving her papers to pee on will not potty train her.. it will only confuse her.

Its hard getting up every few hours to take her out to pee, but its what you need to do.  Consitency is the key to housebreaking.  She doesnt understand that papers are ok sometimes, but othertimes you have to potty outside.  Go to bed a little earlier if you need your rest.  She will beging to hold it longer and longer as she matures.

It sounds like you are doing everything right otherwise.

  2. well you should start house training them right a way of course and most dog get the hang of it over 4 months i would say. bichon frise are normally easy to train, so just keep up what your doing and you should be fine

  3. I use to have a bichon, it took me five years to potty train my bichon. Yes bichons are stubbon to potty train.  Here is a websites on Potty Train your bichon.
