  1. Do you prune your clematis?  They need to be pruned yearly for them to flower properly.  What time of year does it usually flower for you (when it does flower..)  There are three groups that clematis belong to. Each group must be pruned differently to encourage bloom.

Group I: Blooms on old wood..meaning previous years growth. These don't have to be pruned, but if you like, you can nip off the very tips to the first pair of strong buds per stem.   These usually bloom in spring to early summer.

Group II: These also bloom on old wood and new wood (current growth), and need to be pruned 6-8 inches from the top to encourage new growth. These usually bloom in the summer

Group III: These bloom on new wood and must be pruned to 8 to 12 inches from the ground just abouve a pair of buds. These clematis usually bloom late summer to early fall.

Always be sure to prune to just above a pair of buds.  Also, be sure you remove any dead or weak growth.

    Hope this helps!

  2. you can cut the clematis back every year as well. I think biennial means that it only comes back for two years then dies. Like in between a perrenial and annual
