  1. I think you received a lot of good answers.  Some were not right --like the jeans.  You will see a lot of Glitz on the formal night but wear what you think is fancy and nice.  Your 22 wear what makes you happy.  If you feel special and think it is fancy then your done.  It is fun to see everyone dressed up.  They make a big deal on these nights and you can get a picture taken before dinner so show up a little early.  You will see them set up in stairwells and with special back drops in the main meeting places.  Have fun.

  2. long dress, as most will have them on.

    ky

  3. Dont go nuts with a ballgown, its not that formal. I nice evening dress will do fine.

  4. on  a seven day cruise there are two "formal nights" a long dark gown would be preferable.  the other nights still have a dress code, it is just not as strict.

  5. if your on a cruise in the first place, your there to relax.

    dont over think this.

a short cute dressy dress would work out just fine.

you will see the crowds of people who take the dinner way to seriously but your on vacation not a ball =] enjoy it.

  6. either will work...

  7. Dress up!  It's fun when everyone looks nice.  You can try ebay for cheap promish dresses.

  8. ok my 2cents ... dress however your partner is dressing.  If they are in a tux then by all means go for the full formal one.  If they are just in a suit and tie you would look pretty silly.  dress how you want and have fun with it!

  9. They have "Formal Night" and a long dress would be more appropriate I have heard but on my cruise I wore a short black dress and heels like most of the woman.

  10. It depends a little on the cruise line.  Carnival, especially in the Caribbean, is pretty casual.

My go-to dress is a knee-length elegant black number and I just change the jewelry depending on the formality of the line, but I think it might help to put it in the context of menswear....

Carnival & RCI: Especially in the Caribbean, guys can get away with just a button-down shirt and dress pants.  Some ladies were in what I'd call a sun dress. A full-on gown might look a little out of place, but go with it if you want.  There are always at least a few couples are in tuxedos and floor-length gowns.

HAL, Celebrity & Princess: A little fancier.  Jacket required for men, some will wear tuxedos.   A gown or cocktail dress would be fine.

Cunard, Seabourn, Regent: Very fancy.  Tuxedo for men.  Gown for women (or really nice cocktail dress).

NCL and Oceania: No formal nights

If this is your first cruise, you might want to check out the Introduction to Cruises (describes a "typical day", explains costs, answers FAQs):

And possibly also the "Know Before You Go" guide (packing list, how to stay healthy, etc.):

BTW, you can see pictures from people's cruises (including some shots of people's outfits) in the Cruise Journals:

And if you want to add your own pictures / stories from your cruise, that would be awesome.

    Have a great trip!

  11. You need to know your audience. If you are ever unsure of what to wear lean to the side os conservatism. Dressing for success means being ready for any situation. Going to the Caribbean means having less clothes but on a cruise ship it is always breezy. What ever you choose, just remember have a great time.

  12. A cocktail dress would work. You don't have to wear a long gown. Something like this would be appropriate. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

  13. Doesnt matter. Some ppl dress up like its cinderellas ball. Others put on jeans and a nice shirt. They dont care what you wear really.

  14. We have been on quite a few cruises and like everyone else is saying, you can wear whichever you feel more comfortable in. There will be 2 formal nights on a 7 night cruise. The captain's night is on one of those nights. I have seen some people wear pants outfits and others wear gowns that look like they are going to the emmys, and everything in between. Do what you want to do. If you like to dress up, then do it. If you don't, wear something not as dressy. The only thing they ask is that you don't wear shorts and t-shirts in the formal dining room, and no jeans on those days. I personally have a couple long formal evening gowns that I wear, and my husband wears a tux. I figure I don't get the opportunity to get that dressed up anywhere else, so I take advantage of it. Don't stress and have a great time.

  15. Ok...Ive been on 7, you can wear long or short. If you have dresses you bought for weddings, New Years or even Prom, go for it. I have seen all lengths, colors and styles. There are alot of Mother of the Brides dresses on cruises. Wear something that makes you feel like a princess, if you want long, then I say go for it, you wont feel out of place

    Have fun

  16. It's not prom. I think a short dress that is classy would work. You're not required to attend the dinners. But I would try to go to them all since the food is usually the best compared to what you'd get other places/times on the ship.

  17. Like others have said, you don't have to go all out prom night! Just a nice formal dress or maybe even a cocktail dress would do. But I have seen some that do buy the 'Cinderella' gowns and tuxs for the formal dinner. But it's not really all that necessary.
