Question for cricket fans?

Why Indians are so crazy about cricket though Indian cricket team is not as strong as other cricket superpowers and have faced shameful defeats many times.

Of course there are good players like sachin..but is it because of that indians prefer cricket to other sports?

In other countries, I see people watching all sports but here it is much skewed!!

What other sports is India good at? Can India bring home a FIFA World cup? or can they at least bring home hockey World Cup (I don't think, hockey can do much harm to cricket's popularity in India). But certainly football can. I'm an earnest football follower. And I follow cricket as well.

That's a good point. India aren't the worlds best but yet they have the largest cricket loving population.

I know that when i watch tennis, i ussually go for the underdog. Going for the person who is less likely to win makes you quite passionate for them to win. maybe it's the same with Indian fans, they want there team to win everything, cricket is a world known sport. If i make any sense at all.

Well, I would put it simple. People from different countries have their different favourite sports which the majority of that nation follows. Cricket is popular in India & the passion for the game comes to people naturally, can't be forced to follow something just because "others" like it. India is really good in many games including tennis, golf, hockey, shooting, weight lifting etc. & certain people follow them too but the "majority" follows cricket as they find it more entertaining.

EDIT- Ben, sports is not JUST about football, research about India's contribution in those other games I mentioned & you'll know.

There are nearly 200 countries in the world & only 7 have succeeded to win the FIFA WC once or more.

you have to give consideration to physical capabilities and sports infrastructure and facilities , social and cultural practices, trends of society , interests of people in sports , literacy, development etc. while considering the overall sports arena, however the game of cricket is a passion in the country as if it is just made for us and hence has taken a special position in the hearts of people!

Its like asking why we english are crazy about our national team and repeatedly tune in to the BBC to see them suck. Oh and India are only the third best test nation 2 points behind South Africa. KOOLIO
