Question:

Question for job in massage therapy?

I'm considering looking into massage therapy as a job but I also like to play and write music, use my hands a lot like for artistic activities, which is really important to me. And I know being a massage therapist for a job can be strenuous. Would it be a bad idea?

  1. shouldn't have anything to do with it, when doing massage, it's usually your back that gets tired, not your hands.

  2. I really do not think so.  Also remember there are different types of massage.  You could use methods that are not so hard on you if you found a problem.

  3. For a massage therapist, the hands are our tools.  Elbows come next.  Backs, third.  For MT's, repetative-use injuries are common for thumbs, middle finger, shoulder (because we use our elbows).  Yes, schools do teach you how to properly use your body to prevent injuries, but this is something to consider if you use your hands to play musical instruments.  I would suggest that you consider MT ONLY if you are passionate about healing a person through touch.

Other ways to heal a person is Reiki healing, CranioSacral Therapy, Shiatsu, Thai Massage.  These use the hands minimally or without major use of the hands.

  4. The thing about jobs in massage is that they are fairly low paying to start with and careers can be challenging in that way as well as the physical demands that it does put on the body.

The thing is that you will just have to take care of yourself and get regular massage yourself to reduce your chances of injury and problems.  There are many different types of massage that you can do that are not strenuous.  It actually is all really more about your beliefs about health that you hold yourself.

I suggest that people go and get a few dozen massages themselves before going into massage to see if you would really like working in that environment.  Talk to the massage therapists and find out more about the career.

  5. A good massage school will teach you how to make a massage minimally strenuous on your body.  Your hands also build up strength as you start working.  You learn to use your body weight instead of your hands and arms.

If you want to do it, go for it.  The link below is for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.  Do research on what the requirements are in your state (provided you live in the US).

  6. I am just like you. I play music and draw and paint. Among many other things with my hands. I am in massage school ,but I am almost done and I have already done many massages in the school clinic. I have not had a single problem, and if you get tense you will have plenty of new friends that will help you out and give you a massage. It's fantastic, and I really enjoy it. Hope that helps and good luck!
