It will affect your SSI. It's considered income in the month you receive it (whether you cash it or not) and resources after that.  Once you're under the resource limit, you'll receive your SSI.  There are lots of things you can do to spend down.  For example, you can purchase exempt resources and you can pre-pay rent.
