I plan to go enlist for the reserves tomorrow and I would like to know some timelines for things. First if I sign tomorrow when would I actually leave for boot? I would like ship out in about a month if possible because I want to be back from everything before second semester of college which is like mid january. I already took my asvabs and I want infantry MOS. Can someone give me a general timeline, and if it would be possible to start college for second semester. Thanks

  1. Given you ship out in Sept, you'll be done with boot camp in around Dec. You'll have 10 days of leave before reporting to SOI (ITB in your case) for infantry training which last for 52 days. It is unlikely in my opinion, that you would make the deadline to sign up for the 2nd semester in the spring for college once you checked in to your unit. It is possible for Marine Reservist to go to college all at the same time. I'm am a Marine Reservist going to school right now. While you're in DEP, your recruiter might take you to where you will be stationed as a reservist (my recruiter did when I was a poolee) to talk to a career planner there at the unit. If you have questions about your future unit, ie about deployments, he/she will be the one who will know.

  2. Because it is the end of the fiscal year, i'd imagine it be hard to leave for boot camp before october 1st. I think the bootcamp is close to 3 months. I don't know if you could get a guarantee that you would be back at your college in January. Talk to your recruiter. Maybe he can get you out within the end of the month. Though, do know that reserves is going to be harder to move up faster compared to active duty.

  3. Your already off to a bad start..You cant enlist into the USMC and expect anything..The USMC comes first and everything else second..

I would say NO..It wont be within a month..There are way to many factors here to try to guess when you would ship..My guess is within 3-4 months..and as an infantry Marine you increase your chance to deploy..So I hope you understand exactly what your getting into here.

If your worried about school and whether you will make the deadline then you will learn quickly that the USMC makes many people miss many deadlines..Bottom line is that they are very very unpredictable which is why I say they come first and you are a far second.

It is no longer about what you want..

  4. Don't plan on it! YOU might be in Iraq or Afghanistan by early 2009!

yes, even if you are in the reserves!

  5. my husband was in the reserve for 7 years. they picked him up for boot on Easter. He did his 13 weeks of boot. then came home for his 10 day leave, then went back. however, when he went back for SOI his foot was broke. he broke it on the final the last week in boot but didnt tell anyone. anyways, he was put into a rehab platoon and was about to talk to his doc who recommended that instead of waiting around doing nothing, he be release and sent home to start college and come back the next summer for SOI. which is exactly what he did. He got home mid Aug, started his semester and when back to SOI the following May.

so what you need to know is when you are shipping out for boot. you wont be able to go back to college until ALL your USMC schooling is over. then you can go back. I would estimate at least a year before you can get back to college once your training starts.

also for as being deployed, you need to look at what unit you will be attached too. when was the last time they went? where are they located? that sort of thing. Before my dh joined his unit hadn't been over since the late 90's, dont know what was going on then. he joined in 2001 and went over in 2004. they are slated to go back next year and are in training right now for it. it is sort of luck up the draw.

My husbands unit is actually a branch of a unit out of another state. so 3/24 has been over more than his unit because of their location.

  6. I spent a little time recruiting in my 4 years. Usually, it is up to your recruiter. You have to pass your drug test. If everything else is okay, you could be shipped out within 30 days. However, your recruiter is going to want to make absolutely sure everything is correct. His/her record is at stake. I wouldn't recommend starting college now. The usual ship out time is 2 to 5 months, but as I said before, it depends on the recruiter.
