I am just over 1 month pregnant and just landed in Canada my health care does not kick in for 3 months. Is it horrible that my first appt wouldn't be til Late October/4 mos. pregnant. I can go to a free clinic but past experience tells me there no good. I just want to hear some opinions. I am eating well taking prenatals and googling everything. This is my first. Thanks.

  1. My opinion is that waiting until you are four months along isn't terribly bad, but if you can go to a free clinic, why not?  Okay, so past experience tells you they are no good, but isn't 'kinda good' care better than no care?

Again , I don't thing beginning prenatal care at 4 months along is terrible...some doctors don't even begin care until almost then.  But I, personally,  would use the free care until my insurance kicked in.

    Good luck!

  2. My first appointment wasn't until three months and then was only once a month until6 months.  I was classed as a high risk pregnancy and this was the case so I wouldn't worry.  You would only be one appointment behind.  The first appointment I had was really just to meet an greet and establish a contact for any problems.  The main thing is irrespective of having cover if you have a concern go to a doctor or the hospital but otherwise I really wouldn't worry about not seeing someone until four months.  I read as much as I could.  Discarded plenty of it but picked up some really valuable things and its amazing how  calm and relaxed you can be and the pregnancy, birth and first few months are far less daunting if you have enough information to actually understand what is going on and what is considered 'normal' or not concerning.  Good Luck

  3. My advice:

    Get on prenatal vitamins.

Buy a good pregnancy book (what to expect when expecting) and read up each month.

Buy a good pregnancy "Eating" book and learn about the foods you should and shouldn't eat.

Look up online all the medicines you can and cannot take.

That's about all you really learn in the first few visits to the doctor's office anyway.

  4. well if every thing is going fine and you have no bleeding and stuff then I guess it's ok to wait til you're 4 months. But if you have the money I'd go to a doctor. They'll probably reimburse you the money once your health card comes in anyways.

  5. Women have gone w/out prenatal care for many many years (it is good but as long as you're taking care of yourself, 3 mos is not a huge deal). If you get sick, however make sure you get it taken care of.

  6. I have a friend with 3 children who NEVER went to the drs....she just went into the hospital told them when she thought she fell preg and took the dr on call at the time...she has had no probs at all....not something i would do...i was at the drs every 2 weeks with my daughter (high risk) but you should be fine....good luck:)

  7. I know that this isn't your situation, but I was pregnant at nineteen.  I didn't tell my mom until three months later (of course I was scared to).  But that's also when I started going to the doctor.  My son is a very healthy young man :-)  It sounds like you are taking very good care of yourself so I wouldn't worry.  If something doesn't look right, you know to go into the ER.  Just to be on the safe side.

  8. don't worry! I didn't get to my doctor until 3mths. it just means they'll try to catch up on everything that has happened thus far, and you'll get your tests and ultrasound done at the regular time. I'm pretty sure they don't do anything major in the first three months.
