Question:

Question for parents: Does this make her a hypocrite?

A friend of mine used to smoke marijuana. She has 2 daughters. She says that she would feel like a hypocrite to tell her kids not to smoke MJ because a - she doesn't feel it's wrong and b - she would feel like a hypocrite because she used to do it. But she will talk against any other drug. Is this an interesting concept? I've never heard of such but then I don't have any kids either. She doesn't think MJ is bad and feels it should be legalized. Thoughts? Comments?

  1. If she feels it's ok to do, then she would be a hypocrite to tell them NOT to do it.  But since she wouldn't tell them not to, since she herself has done it and feels it's ok, she's not a hypocrite.  I don't necessarily think she's a good parent, but she's not a hypocrite.

  2. Don't tell them you smoked BO! Then suggest they try not use the stuff. Not because there's something wrong with it rather, they could get caught by the fuzz.

  3. OK...this isn't about her personal point of view, it's about being a good parent. A good parent tells their child, "It is BAD to break the law." I think my answer is influenced by Dr. Phil.

  4. she's been there and doesn't want her kids to make the same mistake she did

  5. Parents should not lie to their kids. Vegetarian parents should not say that they think eating meat is OK. Dope-smoking parents who see nothing wrong with marijuana should not tell their kids that it is wrong to smoke it.

But I think your friend should arm herself with better information. Sure, it's not as harmful as heroin, but it's not harmless either, especially in large doses.

  6. no, i have done plenty of things i wouldnt want my son to do. it doesnt make me a hypocrite, it makes me a mom.
