Which city did you like better and why?

I know they're two wildly different places, making it a random comparison question, but....... just want to get some perspective. I live in a small, boring city in new york and I'm looking for a drastic change of location but i'm not sure what kiiiiind of drastic change.

  1. montreal, but they speak french there

  2. You need to immigrate to be able to work in Montreal. So a search for "TN Visa". If you have a degree in one of those fields, it is easy to get a visa. If not, forget it.

    Myself I love LA and I am very pleased I moved here. I just wonder why I didn't 20 years sooner. If you want something totally different and funky like Montreal, try San Francisco.

    Just be aware that because LA and San Francisco are so popular, many people want to come here and this has riven up the cost of housing to about double the national average.

    Somewhat cheaper and still super interesting is Seattle.

  3. Both cities are a challenge;

    Montreal is a great place & l can see the appeal but Montreal will require you to have some knowledge of French & getting a work permit & visa.   Getting a job without them will be difficult & unless you know people there, the place can get boring if you can't talk to anyone.

    Los Angeles requires a cross country move & you start right out having to find housing, insurance & taxes even higher then NY.   L.A. is a far different place then upstate NY.   Are you prepared to live in such a big city?

    My advice:  Don't move anywhere until you can put into words the reasons to go.   There is nothing wrong with moving   From personal experience l can tell you that moving doesn't change your life, it only changes where you live.    Good Luck.

  4. Montreal is 2nd largest French speaking city, 70% residents can't speak fair English . Economy there is not good, but the housing is very affortable with good transportation, you can rent one bedroom apt for $400.

    LA is very large, you must have a car to go around,and a lot of Hispanish there, right now it is also difficult to find a job, the one-bedroom rent in LA usually from $1000

  5. Montreal is a beautiful city.  Of course, the winters are long and cold.  The problem is, as a US citizen, you would have difficulty getting a job there.  You'd want to look into what's involved in getting a work permit - I know someone who tried to get one, and it's not easy.

    No way I'd want to live in L.A.  I had the chance to move there, many years ago - job and everything - and turned it down.  Now, San Francisco is another story....

  6. Montreal Canada is a beautiful city, and keep in mind even though Montreal is in Quebec but a lot of people do speak English. (Almost everyone). Visit both places first and see for yourself. Montreal is just like France, hills and mountains and its a just a great city. I also recommend knowing a bit of french as for its necessary to find places and just everyday life. Also in Quebec, there is a lot of taxes so things are quite expensive

  7. i live in california, and i love love love ittt. i love leaving my little bubble of a suburb of the 101 and heading south to the big independent metropolitan areas, or even just the valley. and like shopping and getting my hair and nails done. everything just seems better down theree, from going to the beach to going out to eat. it's very diverse and la has alot to offer. but montreal was a nice visit also, even though they speak french. and the housing is cheaper. but california's amazing. we have forests, deserts, beaches, mountains, farm plains, and concrete jungles all in one. and every city is different in it's own way. it really is a good way to broaden your horizons if you want to learn new things and live a different way. it's a really social atmosphere also, so you'll meet people quick. and maybe even make roomates to help with cost of living.

    some of my other favorites in california are san francisco and santa barbara.
