how do you cope?

college is coming up for me.. and i feel pretty depressed about it. im not really looking forward to it.. and i have no excitement or anything. i am just as empty as i was a year ago. i tried to tell my mother that college might provoke me to try and end my life.. but she doesn't want to hear it.

i just need to know that i can do this.. from an anxiety sufferer's perspective.

because i think nobody can understand it if they havent had real anxiety

  1. I had really bad anxiety attacks for a while, but you have to focus your energy on getting through it rather than the fear of getting through it. You can do it. I promise. It's all a mindset, and trust me, I know it's hard. But you CAN overcome it. If you ever need any help, you can reach me. And there's help lines as well.

  2. I've had serious anxiety about everything. I have to tell you though, you got a lot of perks as a college student. It's way better then high school. Imagine a gigantic range of electives and how many you can take, a very flexible class time, and learning about what you really wanna do in your life. I felt a sense of maturity over high school when I started college.

I started out taking prozac 20mg daily.. then it dropped to 10mg and now I am just taking 5mg and still doing very well. I might be considering taking medication off my life.

  4. I've found that I can cope as long as I don't allow myself not to. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but I've found that when I let myself off too easily and miss a lecture here, or skip a tute there, that's it. I lose control, and am lucky to get through the semester. So I have to tell myself constantly that I'm not allowed to take it easy, and that as terrible as going to a lecture might be, and as awful as I feel, it'll be a lot worse if I don't go.

It's really tough. And, for me, at least, it's only just starting to get easier, a couple of years in. Only you know whether it'll be worth it. For me, it definitely has been, and I'd advise you to try it. Good luck!

  5. I have anxiety issues, and college was difficult at first. But I mean, if it's not college your anxious a/b... it will be something else. That's how I cope... I know I have to do it, so I do. The good thing a/b most colleges is that on campus they have psychologist usually for free. Take advantage of this.. if you feel like ending your life, drop out and pursue something else. At least you'll know you tried. Always remember... things somehow ALWAYS work out for the best. Good luck!
