I have 2 female rats and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for keeping their cage clean. I completely change and reclean everything in their cage about every 3 or 4 days but I could easily clean it every day. I'm finding especially with the summer heat that their cage just wreaks. I got this spray to use which is supposed to eliminate bad smells but it doesn't work that well. I just find that their urine is extremely potent and it smells awful. I don't have the time to clean their smelly cage every single day. Do you have any tips?

Thank you :)

  1. What do you use for bedding? I use aspen and it goes a week without smelling.

Diet contributes as well. No seed mixes of alfalfa for rats.

  2. What cage do you have them in?  If you have them in a tank that is probably why it smells as tanks don't have enough ventilation, so the stink builds up and you have to change it multiple times a week but it will almost always smell.  And first of all, you shouldn't even have a rat in a tank, as they are prone to respiratory infections, and since there isn't enough ventilation, ammonia builds up and causes respiratory problems.

If you have them in a large wire cage[[at least 2.5 cubic feet per rat]], you should spot clean it everyday and clean the entire once a week and the smell should almost be unnoticeable!  If it still bothers you, you could change to aspen bedding which masks smells, but it also sticks to EVERYTHING.  I use carefresh and never really had a problem with the smell...

    Hope i helped,

  3. litter train them that's what i did and it works really well. You can get grat tips for training on the computer

  4. you can litter train them ( thats just putting dirty bedding in a sepertae tray, they go in the same place so theyl catch on) or you could do what i do is i get these willow branches from my pet shop for them to chew but the smell nice too! also open the windows for a few ours a day so its well venterlated that should work!

  5. Well you can try to littleob train them so that you can clean out there litterbox everyday. Females shouldt small. It might be the diet that they have. What do you feed them?

HEY!!!! You stole my answer.....a.s.s hooooole

  6. what bedding are you using? there is a special bedding which eliminates a lot of the urine and poo smell i use it and it actually works http://www.petsathome.com/find/product-i... , if you are already using it then i dont know what you should do, you might just have to put up with it or move them out of the sun. also look at their diet and consider changing it if the bedding doesnt help.

  7. You just clean its cage out once a week, and then you give your rat a bath.     Good luck!

  8. thats odd... my rat cage doesnt ever smell and i clean it every week! if it is a tank, get a cage...the tank doesnt have enough ventilation and they can die! the cage doesnt smell bad either!    try to build one similar to this!
