  1. Good question.. Sometimes I find companies still producing but had switched to a more lucrative market like truck bodys. I'm sort of out of touch with today's realitys because I've seen many villages in NJ lose the rail service along with the loss of factorys and production. I don't know if this helps but Pennsylvainia was a huge rail service State and It seems to me that the Altoona Valley shops were probably the most densest area for body production!

  2. UTCC or Union Tank Car Company makes most of the railroad Tank Cars its amazing how the tank cars are made really impressive

  3. There are many suppliers to the railway industry.  Some make the actual equipment, others produce smaller parts that make up larger pieces of equipment.

Some non-equipment (not railcars and locomotives) manufacturers include:

    -Westinghouse (air brakes)

-Bach-Simpson (speedometers on some EMD locomotives)

    -Cobra (brake shoes)

-Dofasco (trucks and bogeys on Canadian locomotives)

Locomotives are manufactured today primarily by General Electric and Electro-Motive, with a few smaller producers out there.

Equipment (cars) are produced by some of the following companies (and this isn't a complete list):

    -National Steel Car

    -Thrall

    -Gunderson

    -Greenbrier

    -Trinity Rail Car

    -American Car and Foundry

    -Union Tank Car

  4. there are lots !

The trucks for rail cars are made here

    Progress Rail Services

    and B & E Industries

You can search the thomas registry, or global spec for any part you can think of that has to do with railroads, and you'll find just about all manufacturers.

  5. Though some have gone the way of the albatross, the cars you see today could have been manufactured by:

    Evergreen

    Pacific Car and Foundry

    Thrall

    PCM

    Union

    Pullman

    General Electric

    EMD

    Morrison-Knudsen

There are also many pieces of specialty equipment that are crafted by the railroads that operate them.

Much of the maintenance of way equipment is made by Kershaw, Sperry, Spino.
