Joe Doakes was approved for Social Security disability . The folks at Social Security decided Joe had to have somebody to help him handle his money ( a “payee” ) . Lately, Joe decided he wants to become his own payee . People are telling Joe “They might say 'If you don't need a payee, you don't need disability !' and stop sending you money !” . Does this really happen, or is it an “Old Wives' Tale” ? There are all kinds of urban legends and old wives' tales going around the grapevine about Social Security, so I need an answer from somebody who can give me the real truth .

  1. False. He can be his own payee if he can get a written doctors statement saying he is able to handle his own money. There is a form they need to complete this on....but, no, it isn't really even looked at by the people in charge of determining disability. It is placed into your file and changed on the system, and that's all.
