Ive heard getting lessons from a trainer is worth it. But I sort of know a few surfers and Im thinking would it be better to just ask them to teach me or what? And how would I go about that? Ask? Just show up on the beach? I dunno Im so inexperienced but Ive always wanted to surf ever since I was pretty young. How you everyone else learn.

  1. heres a surf camp you can try out.

    they are sponsored by quiksilver/roxy

  2. Start riding a skateboard for one thing. You can ask a surfer if he'll teach you some stuff, but they can be pretty standoffish - especially if there are good waves to catch. Make sure you don't get in their way! I learned just by watching and practicing.

  3. well firstly use a bigger board, those mini mal boards are good for beginners,or even a pintail fish shape.your trainer might be good for help in choosing a board but theres only so much they can teach you.you have to learn on your own.its just easier to learn on a bigger board.start playing around on the white water, and when you feel confident enough start riding bigger waves but be careful not to get in the way of the locals.they dont take too kindly to groms.good luck mate

  4. Bad idea to just ask your friends to teach you.  It's also a bad idea to take a lesson from someone who doesn't teach surf etiquette or board safety rules.  One of the worst things that can happen in the water is have a beginner with no idea of what to do drop in on you or sit in the impact zone so you can't take off.  You don't want to get hurt, hurt someone else, or wreck your board.

I suggest you go to one of the older surf schools around and get a lesson from a certified instructor.  You can also check out the instructors and schools on the nssia.org web site.

  5. Just get your board mate and paddle out, watch people. Mess around in the shore break for a while, practice duck-diving. You will get your coordination right after a while of just messing around with the shories, learn to read the waves, the tide and the rip. ..Dont really have to stress about someone training you, just teach yourself over time. Grab a couple of mates and paddle out...dont let any drop kicks worry you over the 'local thing' either.  Have fun..

  6. Find a surfer and ask for paid lessons. It's cheaper than a trainer.
