  1. This is a very tough question. There are so many rewards from teaching, but you have to be able to withstand the stress and frustrations of the job.

I don't know if I would do it again knowing what I know now...but there have been some good times. Lots of work, tons of regulations to follow, and a lot of patience working with kids. You really need to like the kids, especially the age level you are teaching...I'm in the high school...it's tough, but sometimes rewarding.

Best advice I can give you is to substitute teach for a while and see if you like the routine.

  2. Yes, I would do it all again a thousand times over!

It consumes me taking over evey fiber of my being. When I think of alternate careers, I think of instructional designer, corporate trainer, professor, etc. all of which are teachers.

Teaching is not what I do, its who I am. It defines my very existence.

  3. Like with any job, there are pros and cons.  For me, some of the pros are: great hours (I'm always home by 3.30 or 4.00), great vacation (summers off, two weeks at Christmas, one week Thanksgiving, etc...), and good money (with an MA and years put into the same district).

Some cons: Idiotic parents, illegal immigration, state testing, and kids seem to care less and less every year (at least where I work).

    Good luck.

  4. I would do it all over again, in a heart beat. Teaching is my passion, and I feel privileged to do it.

If you find yourself questioning being a teacher, the best way to go is to sub. If you can handle a sub job, than you can handle just about anything a normal teacher goes through.

Don't listen too much to what others have to say. Go in there, and get the experience for yourself.

  5. I am about to begin my 31st year of teaching.  It is a calling and though I have tried other things, teaching is what I do best and enjoy the most.

There are headaches associated with teaching, but then every career choice has its challenges.  The pay could be better, but the money is not why I teach.  In many ways students are different than they were 30 years ago, but in very basic ways they are the same.  I plan to continue to teach as long as I love it, and when I don't anymore, then it will be time to retire.

  6. I love teaching.  I always knew I would be a teacher.

  7. I love teaching.  It took a while though.  But, that's because I was listening to others tell me how to do a good job...especially with discipline.  There are a lot of uptight people out there.

Once I began to use my own natural sense of humor in the classroom, it really paid off with the kids.  My lessons became more interesting.  And I wasn't as stressed about the kids being perfectly behaved.  I started treating them as I would any adult and they responded in kind.

The only thing I really can't stand about the job is dealing with parents who don't want their children to handle their own problems, but constantly want to help them out of trouble.
