Question:

Question for the experimented vegans out there - Juice fasting and diabetes

Hi.

I know that it is bad for a diabetic to consume juice, specially fruit juice, but I have also read that a juice fasting would be actually good for a person with diabetes.

I have read so much, it is actually very confusing now. So I am asking to the much more experimented vegans out there, who have knowledge about this to please give me some direction:

IS IT GOOD OR BAD?

Thank you!

I would suggest talking to a doctor. My mom is at high risk of getting type-2 diabetes. She needs to be careful about the amount of fruit intake. Fruit contains high amounts of fructose (a sugar compound) that can have bad affects to diabetics. The link above says diabetics should NOT try a juice diet.

  2. I don't know why you're asking this here. Just because someone is vegan doesn't mean they can answer your question.

I'm vegan and I have been on juice fasts occasionally, but I have no knowledge of diabetes whatsoever.

It's a sad fact on YA that many people will give answers to questions on medical issues when they know nothing about the condition, and others will be so enthusiastic about their particular hobby horse - be it juicing or homeopathy or some other kind of woo - that they will indiscriminately recommend it for all conditions, often using the phrase 'studies show' without ever citing a study. (I'm not just talking about V&V btw.)

I'd be very cautious about any advice you receive on this.

    Ask your doctor.

  3. Diabetes is something which should not be messed with, and as someone else has already mentioned it does require very carefull self-discipline at all times.  This is a question you should only be asking to your doctor, as each and every case is completely different so you need to have qualified information that relates only to you.  I suggest making an appointment with your doctor soon to discuss your concerns about this topic before testing it out.

  4. You have a valid medical question. Why in the world would you ask it here instead of asking your doctor?

You are well aware that diabetes is no joke and requires careful self-discipline. Act accordingly and take only qualified advice.
