Question for video editors about video editing jobs?

How does one go about becoming a video editor and who should a video editor contact about vacancies. Is it feasible that a person could learn video editing from scratch without any formal training, like with final cut or does a video editor need to have knowledge of all editing software and equipment, in which case do they have to study at an institution? If so, what institutio or what course have you attended to become a video editor? How many years does it take to become a professional video editor. Is there any industry recognised qualification?

  1. It depends what type of videos and video editing you want to go into.

Training yourself in Final Cut Pro is possible and would be a useful start, but if you can get a training course with accreditation that probably give an employer more confidence. Most media degree courses will cover video editing as may an AS-Level or BTEC in Media Studies, but if you aren't doing a degree there are other qualifications that may help you get onto an internship or work experience course.

It also gives contacts and information on the qualifications required.
