Question for waiters/waitresses...who do you place the check in front of?

I was just wondering how a waiter decides who to palce the check in front of? Is it the person you think is going to pay the bill?

I was a server for 10 years and i always placed the check at the end of the table right in the middle, unless someone had let me know in advance that they would like the check.

Well I was a server and bar manager in naples florida for quite a few years so I have some insight on this matter!

Usually someone will ask for the check, And this is the person who is most likely paying the bill so they would get the check.

Alot of times someone will want to pay for a group they are with and pull you to the side to let you know they would like to pay!

Also alot of it is just server intuition! being able to read your table and your customers! It is usually fairly easy to figure out who is going to want the check by the time the dinner or meal is through!

But if your still unsure and you are about to drop the check the best bet for me was to always slightly open the check presenter so that it will stand up and place it somewhere in the middle of the table and whomever wants to pay will reach for it!

I never just put the check in front of a specific person if I wasnt sure they wanted to pay! If that happens then the server is a little lacking on their table skills and probably doesnt deserve that 20% tip!

Everywhere that I have gone they put it at the end of the table right in the middle.I think I would chuckle if they put it right in front of me.

When I was a waitress I always placed the bill between the 2 people our the 2 couples. I always left them to fight over it. However...if one of them asked prior for me to bring HIM the bill...I would always oblidge! Best Wishes!

They always seem to put it in front of me!! Why!!?? Lol.

...but it should usually be to the person that asked for it.
