Question:

Question on Archery? Right or Left handed bows?

I am planning on buying a re-curve bow, but have not used a bow in a few years now. I have forgotten the rules, on which type to by, right or left. I hold the bow with my left hand and draw with my right. I assume this means that I should purchase a "right" bow. Am I correct about this? Thanks in advance-

  1. Yep you need a RH bow.

  2. Yes, that was a right handed bow that you used.  Right or left handed has nothing to do with whether you're right or left handed however.  It's determined by which of your eyes is the dominant one.  Right eye dominant people shoot right handed bows which is held in their left hand and drawn with the right.

To tell which eye is dominant, you do one of several eye dominance tests.  One we use a lot is, you stand up straight, pick a target far away that is straight ahead of you.  Look at it with both eyes open.  Now point both of your palms toward the floor, and put them together, such that your fingers on one palm crosses the fingers on the other palm.  You'll now have a small diamond shaped hole in between your palms, between the two index fingers and the two thumbs.  Make the hole small, while looking at the target, raise your arms up so that you can center the target within this hole.  Keeping the target centered in the hole, bring your hands to your face.  The eye that the hands come back to is your dominant eye.

  3. Hi gary shey,

Targetbr has the right test to follow.  You use your dominant eye as the test to determine whether you should shoot with a left or right handed bow..  Most of the time, if you are right handed, you will also be right eye dominant and require a right hand bow.  However, there is a decent minority percentage of people who are not so it is worth doing the simple test he recommends.  If you are right eye dominant as I suspect; then, the technique you mentioned in your post is absolutely correct.

Now, if you really want to get a lot of different answers, ask what is the best recurve bow?  You will find that everyone has their own favorite.

  4. Absolutely right hand bow.
