I have a Calico gold fish.

It is swimming but is very very weak. It will swim around for 8 seconds and go up to get air. But after air it just falls back down to the bottom. And it is having a hard time getting up to the top and getting air. IT is also getting air every 10 to 15 seconds. I know i can get a new one but thats not the point i dont want it to die. Wats wrong with it . Say before it dies. It looks fine but is dieing. Help. Once again it is having very hard time swimming to the top of the tank and is hardly swimming at all. It is going only up for air and swims up for food.

  1. i say fill a small bucket with water add salt pick your fish up in a net then dip him the salt bucket in and out this will get rid of any yukky things and then change hes water and put a small pinch of salt in hes water works everytime when any of my little fishies are looking a bit sick

  2. Move your fish out of the aquarium first and foremost into a secondary aquarium.  Fill this aquarium with spring water and add stresscoat or a similar product to make sure no harmful chemicals are left in the water.  Make sure the water in this aquarium is shallow enough so it won't struggle getting to the top but deep enough for the fish to swim easily.

I had the same thing happen to one of my fish recently and it was a random chemical in the water that was effecting them.

Also keep your fish quarantined from your main aquarium for a few days to make sure he isn't ill.

Although I hate to mention the worst possible outcome, if your fish continues to live but still acts like this, it might be necessary to put him down.  If it comes to that put your fish into a small ziplock bag and place it in the freezer, it is a painless way for them to pass on.

  3. How are you keeping the fish? It sounds like it may be suffering from any number of things, the most likely being a swimbladder disorder.

Goldfish need very large (20 gallons for one) tanks which are heavily filtered and highly oxygenated. Anything less leaves them susceptable to all sorts of problems, diseases and disorders.

See if the fish will eat some cooked deshelled pea, then do not feed it anything for several days. Watch for poopy. Keep the water quality immaculate with very regular partial water changes (regular dechlorinated tap water). See if that helps.

If not, it could be another more serious internal disorder which will be more difficult to resolve.

  4. it could be that the fish isnt getting enough oxygen...if you have an airstone, make sure its on. Maybe try getting one as soon as you can if you dont. Check the temp on the water too...i know goldfish do pretty well in cool water...but it couldnt hurt. Maybe theres too much ammonia? Whatever it is...quarantine it for now and test your water. Good luck! :(

  5. we really need more info as there are a lot of things that could be causing this..

    what size tank?

    what's the water temp?

    filtered?
