Question:

Question on Caller ID Spoofing?

I was surfing the web when I came upon a website that you can call someone and change your caller ID (phonegangster.com). I had a lot of fun pranking people using different caller IDs. The only thing is I maxed my calling limit and now I have to pay! I've tried other websites, but I managed to max all the other websites! Is there a website where I can caller ID spoof for free, or a device I can but that I won't have to constantly buy minutes?

Caller ID Spoofing is when your number doesn't appear on the caller ID, a different number does.

  2. You don't need a website. You need a PABX. You can then spoof your caller ID all day long.

The PABX talks to the network over a digital interface on which it gets to declare the caller ID. Since the PABX may have multiple numbers behind it, it is necessary for the PABX to be able to publish different numbers based on who is calling.

As the interface were designed, there is absolutely no form of authentication or integrity on these messages. In short, the PABX can lie and get away with it.

This is probably what these web site operators have and they have just put a web front end on it.

A PABX is a mini telephone exchange. The sort used in offices with multiple telephones. You can get them on ebay. You will want a suitable line from the phone company too. T1 and/or some form of ISDN.

A more flexible way of building a PABX that you plan to pull tricks with is to use asterix on Linux in a PC equipped with a telephony interface card. It is open source and highly configurable.
