Question:

Question on Choice of Deck on the Monarch of Seas?

I am reading reviews saying its not really worth spending extra money to upgrade to ocean view, because all you have to do is walk out of the room. My friend and I don't plan on spending too much time in our room(other then getting ready and sleeping). We also are trying to budget(but don't mind spending extra if its really worth it). Should we just book an interior on deck 8 ? I have heard reviews about Monarchs elevators and such, and we would like to be close to the events/dining rooms. So is higher the way to go? Any suggestions? thanks!

  1. If you are at all prone to motion sickness, you may want to consider a cabin on lower decks near midship, as you will feel less motion there.  You want to look at the deck plan for both the deck above you and the deck below you, so you can avoid noisy areas [disco, theater, galley, etc].

You can find info about the different decks/cabins at CruiseCritic.com.  Click on "Boards", then go to "Cabin Selection Tips" and/or "Royal Caribbean" and do a search for the ship name/deck name or just browse.

  2. An interior cabin is just what it says, a room with NO windows, just a door.  And if you do not have a light on you are sitting in total darkness.  Now, would you rent a hotel room with absolute no windows so you could not even tell if it was day or night?  that's the question you need to answer for your cruise.  Whether you will be satisfied not being able to see the ocean or to sit in a room with no windows.

Now, those people who say it does not matter are not considering the fact that if you DO have an outside or balcony cabin you will spend more time in your room relaxing.  All cabins have a TV and many now have an easy chair of love seat for relaxing.  So if you have a picture window where you can see the sunshine and the ocean you will spend more time there.  If you have a balcony you will spend time on it also.

But, since you say that you are concerned about price then go with the inside cabin.  But I think you will enjoy the outside cabin more.  The cheapest cabins are generally those on the lower levels and if you want higher up you will likely pay more.  My personal preference, based on many many cruises, is a higher floor and a balcony cabin.  That's what I enjoy most, having my private space on ship for when things get noisy and crowded.

  3. Oceanview is really nice if you feel closed in since the interior rooms are small, but the cabins on Deck 8 and Deck 7 are all obstructed views (meaning the lifeboats).  You can see around them, but you can't see down to the water as that view will be blocked.  The higher decks are the more expensive oceanview which are also a little bigger and the suites.  The lower decks (6 and below) are closer to the activities and dining rooms but those oceanviews are the higher range. I wouldn't go below Deck 5.  Deck 6 is probably a good choice for either an interior or a nice oceanview and you will still be a little removed from the casino and bars which are on Deck 5.

  4. It is not worth money spending it on ocean veiw...it is really hard to get up in the morning because there is no light, but that is it. Umm, if you get motion sickness you want to be on deck 2 or 3 in the center....if you don't then i would chose deck 8 or 7, where it is kinda in the center of all things...after awhile you are use to the stairs...so yea....

    hope that helps

  5. Great question!  I am a frequent cruiser with Royal Caribbean and I have learned that the way to save money is getting an inside cabin.  Specially since you are mentioning that you don't plan on spending too much time in your room, and since you are on a budget.  I always get an inside cabin towards the middle of the ship.  You are not missing out on anything!  Trust me on this.  If you were the type of cruiser that liked to spend time in the state room then YES by all means spend the extra money and get and ocean view...I only sleep, shower and dress in my stateroom...otherwise I am out doing something!!
