Question:

Question on English and American Labrador.?

Well I am currently planning on getting a dog soon. =]

It's going to be a black female lab.

I read that there's a difference between the English and American ones, but then I asked 2 people that have labs and they said I was probably thinking of like a bulldog or something. They had the dog for a while, one for 7 years and the other for 5.

I heard that it was the height difference..

So is there a big difference between the two?

And,

Could a dog with American parents become an English or vice versea (If it depends on height)

Thank you.

  1. American labs are lanky, tall, and have a bit more energy.

English labs are shorter, blockier, and more mellow. You can really tell the difference by looking at their heads

Here's a website with some more info:

  2. As with some other breeds, the English (typically "show") and the American (typically "working" or "field") lines differ. Labs are bred in England as a medium size dog, shorter and stockier with fuller faces and a slightly calmer nature than their American counterparts which are bred as a larger lighter-built dog. No distinction is made by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but the two classifications come from different breeding. Australian stock also exists; though not seen in the west, they are common in Asia. 3. Yes there is a difference just like if you get hunting lines or show lines the dogs look different. I would check the labrador kennel club in your area, these are people that breed and show labs and  are all around enthusiasts of the breed and  know the difference between the many different lines. Mostly english lines are shorter and have blocker heads, american tend to be taller and narrower heads. Also once in contact with your local kennel club they can point you in the direction of a good breeder.
