Question on Political Parties?

In the 1840's, what political parties were there? Was it the Whig Party and the Democratic. And what was the whig party?

  1. an old political party that was dissolved in 1856 when the death of clay and Webster came in 1852 they believed in modernization congress domination over government and economic protectionism.

Yes, it was mostly the Whigs and the Democrats.  Another party that was significant at that period was the American Party, also sometimes called the Know Nothing Party.  There was also the anti-slavery liberty Party, which was succeeded by the Free Soil Party and eventually the Republican Party.

    The Whigs were originally formed out of a variety of factions that had little in common other than their opposition to the dominant political figure of the era, Andrew Jackson.  But in general they favored tariffs, internal improvements, and the National Bank.
