Question on a stat quoted to me by a fellow Sabres fanatic?

Last night I was talking about the SCF with a friend, and we got to talking about when it would be the Sabres' turn. He said that he'd heard a stat that every time that a President's Cup team failed to make the playoffs the following season, they've won it all the following year. So basically, 06-07 Sabres win President's Cup, 07-08 Sabres suck at life, 08-09 Sabres allegedly should go all the way. Anyone else ever heard of this? How many times has this happened, if it's a true stat? Just curious and not quite knowledgeable enough to find all that info without help. Thanks, guys!

I think I remember hearing something about that on WGR. I'll try and look it up.

****Buffalo is only the second team in nhl history to win the presidents trophy and not make the playoffs the following season. The other team, the Rangers won the Presidents trophy in '91-'92, then didn't make the playoffs in '92-'93, and then won the cup in '93-'94. So technically every time a team has won the presidents trophy and not made the playoffs the following season they have won the cup the following year. However, it has only happened once before.

Sabres already had chances with Hasek to win games in the playoffs... And you believe that 2008-09 Sabres will win Stanley?

so basically this all means that our troubles will be over next season and the Sabres will win the Cup!?  can you find a stat that will get the Bills back to the Super Bowl!?

You are forgetting one crucial point.  There is no such thing as the President's Cup.

It is called the President's Trophy.  I know, I know, who cares.  But it just sounds dumb.  Its not a Cup.  You don't hear people calling it the Stanley Trophy.

Coincidences like this are just that... coincidences.  Just like the 33 year theory of the 0-3 series deficit comeback.  Don't waste your time buying in to that c**p.  Especially because you're talking about Buffalo.  They've lost too much.

That's a first for me.   The Sabres have never won it all, so where's the trend?

Maybe so, but because A+B=C doesn't mean that the Sabres are gonna win next year, especially after letting here fan fav go even though they say he (Campbell) might back.  Also Miller could be on the move.   We'll have to wait and see

the NYR won cup in 94

missed the playoffs in 93

and were president trophy winners in 92

it was stated on WGR550  before the playoffs even started i think it was during one of the last games

Well, in 1992 the Rangers won the President's trophy, then in 1993 they didn't make the playoffs (I don't think).  In 1994, they won both the President's trophy and the Cup.

But other than that... I don't really know of any other examples.

That stuff doesn't mean anything. There was a "curse" on the Presidents Trophy until 2002 when the Wings won the presidents trophy and the cup
