Blanche quotes literature and occasionally speaks French; her language is elegant, educated. Stanley, on the other hand, uses coarse, sometimes brutal, language. How does their speech reflect their perceptions of reality? Explain your answer... I need some ideas for essay... Thank you!!!

  1. omg i did this practise question about a month ago!

I havent got it with me but I'll try and think of some ideas. (are you doing AS level English lit btw ? I am! )

Blanche is trying to be something she isn't. She often pretends to be in a glamourous place (like in the artistic parisian cafe with Mitch). This is like her language.

She tries to cover up reality (puts paper lantern over light bulb) and tries to make things prettier than they really are - like her language.

Stanley is living in reality - he brings home his 'meat' for his wife etc and his language reflects that. He is base and see things in black and white. Blanche see things in shades of grey ("Allan Gray"...)

Hope this helps you get started on your essay.
