Question on breeding Betta's and the quality of the Betta's and "Mutts"

I am going to breed my Cambodian betta's but my female is what alot of you would call "a petstore mutt" she is a veiltail but i was wondering if by mutt she could be mixture of different tail types or if that was reffering to color genes, or something else entirley? would the quality of the male make up for it? I really like her which is why im set on her and not a fancy breeders pair... ?

and i want to make clear that i know what im getting into, its not for money, and im not planning on breeding them for 3 more months, and have extensivley been reading up on breeding and will have everything i will need. Im removing her after about 40 or so eggs and giving several to responsible friends not trying to sell them.

yes she could be something eles to.... and yes the male will or might anyways mine did but just cuz what people say isnt ture

  2. The 'mutt' as you referred means color and type. You dont know what her parents, grandparents and great grand parents were. So there is no way to tell what kind of fish your going to get.

Veiltail is going to be the dominant gene because it's been around longer.

You cant breed a delta tail and a veiltail and get delta tail babies.

Imagine if there were no delta's or crown's or halfmoon's. Imagine there are still just veiltail betta's.

Now, those new betta's are going to have to come from somewhere but it's going to take generations upon generations to get the result you want.

You'll take the one delta you finally happen to get, with neither parents being a delta it's unlikely that betta is going to produce more delta's like herself until she is paired with another delta making the delta strand stronger. After a few generations the parents and grandparents will now be something more of a specific strand instead of mutt's eventually you'll get a lot of babies that are exactly what you want

Hope this helps, it was harder to explain than I thought, lol

  3. The female is veiltail and those are the only tail type genes she carries.  The "mutt" portion more refers to the color genetics as with pet store bettas you have no idea what color genes she's carrying.  As for the tail type she'll only donate VT genes and its a grab bag as far as colors go.

Both fish donate half of the genetic material to the fry so no matter how good your male is the fry will still get half of their genetic material from the female.  The main reason its not reccomended to breed pet store bettas is that bettas can have big spawns and it can be very hard to get rid of or sell unwated fry because why should someone buy from you when they can get the same kind of fish for $3 at Petsmart.  But if you have already made plans on what to do with fry and know what your getting into and why you want to do it than go ahead.  I could really care less if you were going to do it for money or not cause why not make a couple bucks from something that brings you pleasure as long as your doing it responsibly.

  4. the male's quality will not make up for her genes, ill show you an article in a second.

well i couldnt find the article because betty splendens is not available sometimes for some weird reason. Well, i think you should save some time and breed the best fish you can possibly get, unless you are just doing it for practice.
