is it neccesary to have a subsonic crossover in a ported box? and if yes why? what happens if you dont have a subsonic filter?

  1. You use a subsonic filter on ported boxes so that your sub will not play down past your tuning frequency. If you were not to use one the sub could unload, which is a fancy way of saying flopping around like a fish out of water and basically frying the sub.

    You don't need one on a sealed box, as you have no risk of causing the sub to unload.


  2. subsonic is important in any type of enclosure.

    its main function is to filter-out low frequencies which can damage your subwoofers. for example, set the subsonic filter to 26 Hz. so the subwoofer wont move too much with frequencies lower than that since they are not audiable by the human ear.

    but on all my builds, i always set the subsonic filter to match the tuning frequency of the box. this will give a much better audio result and will keep the subwoofers from bottoming out and damaging themselves.

  3. listen to SICK214, they are not really necessary for sealed boxes but if you don't use it on a ported box you run a very high risk of blowing your subs from too low frequencies
