Question:

Question on cleaning tack related items?

Hey there, so I've decided to go through some of my tack stuff and clean it. So I need to know how to clean some of these items, since I am clueless. Here's what I have:

Two saddle pads that need cleaning, I have one magenta colored one with purple-ish piping.

A white saddle pad with royal purple piping, and my initials on the side, stiched in.

how should I wash these, especially the magenta one so they don't bleed/lose color?

I also have a white sheepskin saddle pad, it has a very high back, if that makes sense, like the back of it is cushioned. It is in the shape of the saddle, and it's just getting dis-colored and getting other things on it, dirt and such.

And I have a pessoa ear fly mask thing. The kind that goes over their ears when riding, and falls down to their forhead (http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=3682) Except mine doesn't have the crystals and it is white with a gold lning where the white is on that one.

So my question is, how do I clean these all? ALl are dirty. Thanks!

  1. Take the sheepskin one to be professionally cleaned.

Wash the two saddle pads seperatly in the washing machiene and the fly mask with the saddle pad of simerlar colour.

  2. The sheepskin would be better off professionally cleaned and the other two should be separately washed with a little detergent no softener on COLD. The mask can probably be washed with similar colored items.

  3. I wouldnt wash them at home, even if horsey sweat does smell good, it wont fair well with your classmates/co-workers/non-horsey family members...trust me, I washed ONE saddle pad in our washing machine & the smell took FOREVER to dissapate!!

I would say, hunt down a local tack shop (most of them either will clean horsey-stuff or know of a place you can take them too...) , the fly veil....you can probably just hose out, if its really dirty, you can take some horse shampoo to it with a dandy brush to scrub it out...if the dirt stains, you can try a little vinegar to get it bright white again...

    Good Luck!!

  4. Throw it in the washing machine to get it really clean.

  5. Use 'WOOLITE' detergent, follow bottle directions, wash/soak each one separately.  I do mine in the bathtub, a la, grape stomping.

Barefoot, of course.  Drain the water, more grape stomping to remove excess water then outside to rinse with the hose and let drip dry.

    Cold water inhibits 'bleeding'.

  6. The pads: put one in at a time, cold water, and a little detergent. DO NOT DRY. it will shrink. hang it up.
