Question:

Question on contract farming?

I have heard of some people talking about contract farming in the past. I know this is a vague question but does anyone know websites of companies who are into contract farming? (to be more specific if possible, a first world country looking for a contract farmer in a third world country)

  1. e.g. grown in Latin America and Asia?

    Just curious, what farm product?

    e.g. chickens, pinneapples, what?

Are you a student doing a paper for your class

or you are a farmer/bizman wanting to venture?

  2. i assume that you are asking about a contract to "produce a set quantity of crop" with a major buyer,  not to "contract your farm to another farmer". correct me if im wrong.

cargill, bungee, archer daniels midland are major world wide grain buyers.  and i believe that cargill is increasing their interest in the meat markets.

if youre interested in fruits, vegetables, herbs, or flowers i cant help.  i would go to the grocery store to find the product you would like to produce and write down the names and manufactures of the products and then visit their websites. some "brands" are just that and buy there product from a large company.  the large company is who your looking for. usually the large company has brands of its own and there will be a link on that brands web site to the parent company.  thats how you will find the contacts you seek for fruits, vegies, etc......

seeing that it is a modest 70 hectares i would suggest fruits, vegies, flowers, or anything organic.

the national organic program (www.ams.usda.gov/nop) in the u.s. has a list of organic buyer for just about anything.  most of these buyers must import product from other countries to meet demand here in the states.

  3. In the US big ones are Cargill and Tyson. I really don't know if they contract in other countries, I imagine that they do. We are traditional farmers and not huge fans of contract farms, so I am not real knowledgible, outside of knowing those two names to offer to you.
