Question:

Question on diluting your eyes for checkup!!!!!!?

I took my friend to the eye doctor because she needed a new contact lens exam. She agreed to the dilation drops, and her eyes dilated in a matter of minutes! My eyes (and all the other people I know who do eye checkups) dilute in half an hour, never less. I'm very curious as to why my friends' eyes dilate so quickly, and what the drug is called and what it really does.

Thanks!

  1. I just went to the eye doctor today. They put dilation drops in (took effect in 15 minutes) and at this time (about 7 hours later) it still hasn't worn off completely yet. The dilation time seems to vary per person.

  2. madracyl and neosenephrine usually. people with lighter eyes dilate more quickly because the more pigment (color) your eyes have the stronger the muscle (iris) is.

  3. Mydriacyl (tropicamide) and  Neosynephrine (phenylephrine ) --  commonly used dilating drops that are manufactured in different strengths.

Really though, there are about a dozen different types of dilating drops. (Cyclogyl, Atropine, . . .)  Three main things that affect how fast the pupils dilate:

    1. Type of drop used

    2. Strength of drop used

    3. Initial pupil size and reaction (some people have larger, faster pupils that react more quickly to dilating drops)

(ok, 4): lighter colored eyes. although that may be more theory than fact, not sure
