Question on fasting:?

When I was younger and single, I went without food for almost one week, until a friend helped me out. I have also known people to have gone without food for a couple of days or so.

Question:

Can fasting up until 8pm in the evening; Ramadan, for one day, be truly classed as 'fasting?' When come 8pm those who go without food know full well they will have a feast at that time, as though they have never eaten in their lives?

No cynicism is intended here.

Opinions.

  1. The human body can go without food for 30 days, and water for 3 days. Think normally, we eat 3 meals a day, breakfast lunch and dinner, right?? So we skip a couple of meals and make up for them later. If you go without eating for days at a time, your body can deal with it, but eating on and off is hard for your body to know whats going on, for me I have hunger pangs until about 12 pm each day, then they just disappear and im ok for the rest of the arvo. These hunger pangs continue everyday for about 1 week until your body adjusts to the new routine, then its smooth sailing from them....

By the way, the purpose of the Muslim ramadan fasting is too put ourselves in the shoes of less fortunate people who dont eat all day, so we can truly know what they feel, then after ramadan we have Eid (similar to christian christmas) and we pay Zakat (money for the poor people). Its a great time of the year for us....

  2. dude religion is full of useless traditions and practices

  3. Fasting is to be one whole day, its a time in the Bible that fasting is to be done. I am looking up fasting in the Disciples because I recall a story wear the priest accuse of them not fasting, Priest are to fast. but as the Disciples they were with Jesus the son of god had not to.Note I recall fasting only right before my surgeries.

  4. There's nothing wrong with Fasting, because it helps u in ur relationship with Christ! It helps u focus only on God without distractions!

I don't agree with the way Islamic people do fasting because they just do it because it's their religion! As well, they think with good deeds, fasting, and praying that they can go 2 heaven! Not true, because God only wants u 2 open ur heart 2 him and allow him 2 guide the rest of ur life free from sin. Even if u do so on the last day u r able 2 go 2 heaven, because u understood the Lord's plan, and his love 4 u!

U fast when u feel a real need 4 Christ and want 2 focus all ur heart and soul on him, not like the Islamics do! As well, it's optional in the Christian Faith because it doesn't make u a better person in God's eyes!

  5. from The Qur'an

[2:185] Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.

[2:184] Specific days (are designated for fasting); if one is ill or traveling, an equal number of other days may be substituted. Those who can fast, but with great difficulty, may substitute feeding one poor person for each day of breaking the fast. If one volunteers (more righteous works), it is better. But fasting is the best for you, if you only knew.

2:187]  Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the Masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD's laws; you shall not transgress

them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

thus fasting is not intended for hardship but salvation

  6. Muslims don't know what it means to fast.  They don't go to bed hungry.  That's suffering, especially for a child.  I've heard Muslims say they pig out before sunrise and in the evening when they are allowed to break their fast.  It's not a true way of fasting and not the way God mentions in the Bible.  Jesus went without eating, just some water.  We're not suppose to brag about it.  Actually in Matthew it says to not let anyone know.  God openly rewards what you do in private.  It's meant to bring us closer to God.

  7. yeah! fasting like in ramadan is nothing like being poor but it can give you a little hint. like you said in ramadan i know that it is only x hours till i can eat but its totally another matter not knowing when or if my next meal will come! ramadan cant mimic the panic you feel when you are fainting in public cause you havent eaten for a few days. it can never make you cry like the mother who has to consol her hungry children. but it does give you a small hint... sympathy instead of empathy.

  8. I believe fasting can be described as a lack of food for any amount of time.

A few years back the church I was attending at the time called for the church to fast and said whether it be 1 day or 1 meal..it was still considered fasting.

The time limit on your fasting is between you and God.

  9. a custom is a custom. for a Christian to fast it can be in many ways or of one item they choose not to eat for that day <> one they normally eat that is<> for the Jews yam kipper means no eating for only one full day out of the year the rest of the time it is up to the person if they choose to fast or not on any given day!

  10. ok then why dont we talk about lent????

1st it was supposed to be no food from animals...then it was simply no meat...

and now its just turning down ur favourite meal???

and how about u go on with out water in the scorching sun of arabia for 1 week??

infact not eating for 1 week is harmful howver our partial fast helps clean our kidneys!

  11. Fasting is a great way to put off the human desires and allow yourself to focus on spiritual learning. It is a way to show God that you are in control of your body. Fasting can be for as long or short as you want.
