It can be caused by high ammonia levels in the tank, or parasitic infection. If it is limited to a single fish, take it out of the tank and get rid of it.

fin rot is generally caused by poor water conditions, keep doing partial water changes every day-every other day, and the fin rot should heal up in no time at all. do not fluch your fish etc, it is cruel. it will heal, and unless its been left to the point the splits have reached the tail/fin base it will recover. you can buy medications to treat it,but you are best avoiding chemicals if you can, just try the water changes, remembering to add the dechlorinator to your water before adding it to the tank and in a few days you should start to see a difference.

Fin rot is caused by parasites that live in dirty water. You must change your tank water more often.
