hey everyone

i have a question to do which is a written report for geochemistry,

i dont want answers but rather some help trying to understand the question being asked and what i would be expected to write about

the report subject is "Discuss the methods and technologies employed for geochemical exploration using stream sediment and soil samples"

thanks :)

  1. The joy of geochem exploration is that it is much cheaper than drilling boreholes (for minerals) or wells (for oil). We are letting mother nature do some of the work for us.

Your report should start with the basics of geology - how minerals (especially ore minerals) weather. What is left / liberated when a rock is broken down by chemical and biological processes. Often these products are the most resistant minerals (often the things we are looking for - gold, diamonds etc). Alternately easily dissolved ore minerals will liberate atoms or ions into the water flowing over them.

In the case of geochem oil prospecting - you will need to discuss how hydrocarbons form and how they migrate upward. Finding an oil or gas seep was the earliest form of hydrocarbon exploration. Now days they look for trace hydrocarbon in the soil.

The second part: How are the liberated "indicators" transported from the deposit? How far and how are they deposited (ie gold in river deposits)

That takes care of the basic geology. Next you need to look at the technology. Include sampling methods, lab analysis and how the data is analyzed (statistics and maps).

Hope that helps and good luck.
