I was wondering are there any good tips on how to check if apples (Preferably red delicious), because i don't want to waste my money on an apple that 'looks' good on the outside but on the inside is rotten on the inside.

  1. Just look for apples that don't have any bruises, soft spots, or cuts on the outside.  Also, I usually avoid buying apples that are the last ones left in their box since that usually means they have been there a while.  If there are only a few left of the kind I was going to buy, I'll just get a different kind instead that week.

  2. a firm outside with a med/dark red color is usually what i go for and they are always juicy and very sweet.

  3. With apples it is hard to tell sometimes.

Up until recently all the Red delicious from Washington State are last season's apple.   You may find the apple to seem hard on the outside, but soft on the inside.  They can even be off white or brown on the inside.

The best way to choose an apple is to look for ones that still have the stem ON.  Look for the shiny apples.  These apples are treated with chemicals to make them shiny and keep them fresh longer.  When the apple is old, it tends to loose some of the shine.

Also, choose apples that do not have bruising or blemishes.

I like to press the apple with my thumb near the top.  If I cant press it in, then it is probably good, if I leave a dent, then the apple is probably soft inside.

There is really no sure way to tell about apples.

Ask your produce person if the apples are New Crop.  The New Crop Washington Red Delicious Apple should start coming in soon if it isnt here already.

  4. sorry but should you find a rotten one You of course saved your receipt

    Take it back

Other wise if it is in the store the grower determined to pick and deliver the store manager placed them out

You can be assured they are ripe

  5. Soft spots mean bruises and those make brown spots inside of the apple. They will spoil quicker then good ones.

  6. Check the apples in the bag for bruising, softness and check the bag for moisture. If one apple in the bag is wet then you know at least one of those apples is going bad.

The new crop apples will be out soon (with in 2 weeks).  The ones in stores now are last seasons crop.
