  1. The first thing to know is how much you already know. First I will discuss Microsoft. They have paid courses but you have not the finances for that so I will try to suggest a workaround (like that Computer jargon eh?). The first Places to look are the Microsoft technet and Microsoft's Knowledge base. Find and bookmark these pages. You will need to refer to them often.  Also bookmark the Microsoft Community pages and Join them. You will be able to search the forums for the particular problem. You will likely find much much information there. At your leisure you can look up some common problems through these sources.Look up some common problems like

Blue screen errors or windows won't start. You will see there are numerous solutions in each place. Practise this often. It will help you to more quickly find what you need. One trick I learned is to either keep a database of the problems you resolved (or at the very least a notepad file or files) with problem description and the solution that you found and a link to where you found it.

The next option is to use the search engines. Go to your favourite search engine and type in a search for what the system is doing. Here you will find all sorts of issues discussed and resolved mostly through various forums and discussion groups. As you build a repertoire of forums that you find successfully resolves problems you can join them (since many are free) and build relationships with the folks answering the posts and you may even start to answer some of them (build your reputation). You will have to do your own testing to find people and solutions that suit your sensibilities and opinions as well as the level of ethics you wish to employ.

Note: The internet makes the communty of the world so much smaller than it once was. Ethics plays an extremely important role in how you are able to function as a technician more than any other consideration so one is best not to be associated with unethical and sometimes even illegal practices. Unless of course you are infinitely wealthy and Are an absolute genius at the dark arts of technology. If you plan to make a living off this kind of work you must work ethical or  be an instant genius. The stories of Hackers and such getting high paying jobs with the big software firms or banks and the like are rare and carefully planned out by very clever individuals. Many are just stories. So, to be blunt When in doubt act ETHICALLY which will keep you a great distance from illegal - always.

Go to some used book stores and look for any old Sam's books. They are the authority publisher of books that teach various programs and troubleshooting of programs, hardware and everything in between. If you want info as a reference these books are unparralelled and are usually as non-technical as the subject matter will allow. Another tip is to scan through the glossary in the book and learn that - it will define anything that is discussed in the book and possibly give you a better handle on verbiage used in the hardware and software worlds. Over time you will develop your own Reference library that you can refer to. These books could cost around $5 to $10 or possibly less.

"The More I Know about computers the more I know I don't Know!"

"It is not what the technican Knows, but how fast he can get the information he needs to do his job effectively."

William Redington Hewlett  (founder of HP)

    Video Training Seminar -Toronto 1981

Keep these two statements in mind at all times and work toward those ends. You won't go too far wrong.

One thing you can look at is A-1 Certification for computer hardware. There are some free courses on the internet. Do a search.

There are some books on preparing for the A-1 Certification and you can get those from the library and usually there is somewhere you can locate to do the tests for a small fee. This is only a start point for being a technician. Build your Resource repertoire and become more valuable. This is true with hardware and software.

Best of luck on your Journey!

    Hope this helps.
