Question on "Themes"?

I see a LOT of questions about themes for parties and maybe it's just me but why is a "theme" so important? It seems that like many people feel they MUST have a theme. I'm not sure I get it. I thought people make the party a party (along with good food and music of course). Are people worried that a good time can't be had without a theme? Please enlighten me.

  1. I feel that it just adds something extra to the party!

  2. A theme is not necessary, however it gives the planner some direction for decorating and a menu, many times.

  3. I think people choose themes as it gives them a direction to plan their party. It helps them decide on everything from invites to food to fun. It's like a map that helps plan your party and parties that are well-planned are usually lots of fun.

  4. It's a headache having a theme party because everything has to be matching, etc. If a theme calls for dressing up like a luau or 50's then I won't go because I don't want to spend all that money when I am only going to wear it once. So mean of me but I'm just being realistic. If it was a wedding and they want us to dress in hawaiin attire, then I will respect that because weddings are most important.
