what exactly does rainsford mean by "evil is a tangible thing with wavelengths"?

oh, i love this story, its been a while since i've read it.  i think what it means, if i can recall, is that the presence of evil is everywhere, hence, tangible.  The wavelengths give bad vibes and the whole atmosphere gives almost a sinister aura to the scene. ^-^

He means that evil is a very capable thing for humans, and it can range between many lengths. Evil itself can be like a wave, setting off other unfortunate events.
