Just wanted to see if there is someone out there who knows what the whole plus minus thing in pro hockey means and how you go about calculating it.

  1. + is when you are on the ice when your team scores

    - is when you are on the ice when the opposition team scores

This stat doesn't count when it's special teams.

  2. ur +/- rating goes up when ur line scores and down when they let up a goal   ......in other words (goals for/ goals against)

  3. When teams are at even strength, a +1 is given to each player on the ice of the team that scores a goal, and a -1 to each player on the team that gives up the goal.  However, if a team on a power play scores, no + or - are given. If a team is killing a penalty(short-handed) and scores, each player receives a +1, and each player on the power play team receives a -1. These stats accumulate throughout the game for each player.

  4. you get a + 1 every time your team scores when your on the ice (even strength and short handed)

-1 every time you're on the ice while your team is scored against  (even strength or on the power play)

  5. a plus (+) is if your line is on the ice at the time of a goal

a minus (-) is if your line is on the ice when the opponent score on you.

    For a powerplay/shorthanded sitiuation a plus (+) nor a minus (-) will be counted

P.S.  i have previous read that a powerplay goal is counted as a plus. I have never calcualted stats that way and the coaches and amngers i've talked to say they've haven't heard of it eaither.

  6. If you are a player on the ice at full strength and your team gets scored on, you receive a -1. If you are a player on the ice at full strength and your team scores, you receive a +1. Power plays do not subtract from a player's plus/minus, but if your team scores a shorthanded goal, or your team scores on the power play, you receive a +1. Goalies do not receive +/-, they have SA/GA, and of course GAA and Sv%.

I think that's about it lol.
