  1. b.  could not be aged by its (growth) rings.

    Tropical rain forests that don't have a dry period or cold period which causes differential growth of the wood, have uniform growth thus no growth rings.  In climates with distinct seasons, there will be cessation of growth periodically producing distinct growth rings.
