Question:

Question only for tattoo experts and tattoo artists over a tattoo on the spinal cord...?

I would really like to make a purple bow tattoo in the middle of my lower back. I was wondering though whether it is a dangerous place for a tattoo since it is going to be done at the end of my spinal cord... Could it affect anyhow negatively at that part of my body?

I would like mature and perfectly explanatory answers. Thanks!

  1. There aren't really any risks for putting it on your spine, but it DOES hurt. I had a tattoo done on the right side of my back, and part of it was about 2 1/2 inches from the center of my back, and it HURT LIKE h**l. The most painful experience I've had.

  2. You'll be fine. It's a tattooing machine, not a surgical knife. :) All the needles are doing is going deep enough to implant the ink under the skin to leave the pigment. Those needles couldn't go deep enough to saw through the skin, not to mention all the other stuff in the way, unless of course the artist is really trying to hamburger you, and i mean in a Michael Myers sort of way.  I have one done along my spine, and the only thing it did to effect my body was give me the inkaholic's disease (can't get enough ink! ) But the others are right, it is going to be painful. Nothing you won't be able to bear though. Endorphines will kick in and lessin the roar of the discomfort and you'll be so phsyc'd that your doin it that you'll think past it.

I say go for it! You'll be proud of yourself in the end! not to mention have a kick *** piece of work to show off!

  3. I am speaking from personal experience only...nothing happened to me.  I have my entire back done and it was fine.  In certain areas where there are nerves and whatnot, it tingles and feels a little strange, but the needle doesn't go in far enough to cause potential damage to your spinal cord.  It would have to be a very very large needle to do that and tattoo needles are just not that way.  Like I said, I am not a doctor, so I don't know the facts, but personal experience leads me to believe it's just fine.  go for it!

  4. you can tattoo over the spine yes. I have almost all my back done( full back piece in progress)  it is as safe as having a tattoo anywhere else, Mild discomfort aswell but you get that with any tattoo.

    Good luck

  5. It's going over your spine, which is bone, not your spinal cord, which is a cluster of nerves running inside the spine.

Tattooing over the spine is relatively painful (so I'm told) but there are no lasting effects - it's a very common placement for women.

    Go for it!

  6. it wont damage you, or affect any nerve endings or anything. but, keep in mind that it IS the core of your central nervous system and it WILL be painful. plus the bonier the area the more painful it will be. the spine hurts pretty bad but its worth it if you have a good tattoo in the end :) anyway all of this depends on your pain threshold. if you have a high one you shouldnt have too much trouble.

  7. A tattoo needle is nowhere near long enough to damage the spinal column or spinal cord.

  8. Your worries are absolutely unfounded. The ink only goes into the middle layer of your skin (the dermis), so it is nowhere near the bone or nerves. I can say that the spine is quite a painful place to be tattood, but nowhere near the most painful.

There's not much more I can say. You have nothing to worry about.

  9. Other than the discomfort of being close to the bone, no. Never heard of anyone getting wheelchair bound from having ink done on their spine. Doesn't mean it can't happen, just means I've never heard of it happening.
