Question:

Question over 8 ball pool rules...?

My friend and I have the same argument everytime we play. He would sink the white ball, resulting in a foul. I would then place the cue ball BEHIND the bualk line. This is wher my friend stops me. He says that the cue ball has to put ON the line, and hit forward. Is this right? Becuase if it is, and I've only got one ball left, behind the line, then i would be snookered.

So, if I place the cue ball ON the line and only allowed to hit it FORWARD, i dont have a clear shot at my ball.

Does anyone know the proper rules so we can settle the argument?

Thanks,

Sysem

  1. anywhere behind the line is the way people play.

but the fact is, you're both wrong.  the way the pros play, a scratch results in "ball in hand" for your opponent. that means, they can put it anywhere on the table.

  2. Historically, bar rules were set locally by the better more experienced players rather than the newcomer and a foul played behind the head string actually often benefits the player who made the foul instead of providing a penalty for the scratch. You may play by any "house rules" you both decide and agree in advance are to be in effect, but since 1990, the International Rules would dictate the penalty goes to the player who made the foul. In sportsmanship, the incoming player is given ball in hand anywhere on the table as an advantage for the previous player’s foul penalty.

    WORLD POOL-BILLIARD ASSOCIATION

    WORLD STANDARDIZED 8 BALL RULES

    4.14 FOUL PENALTY

Opposing player gets cue ball in hand. This means that the player can place the cue ball anywhere on the table (does not have to be behind the headstring except on opening break foul). This rule prevents a player from making intentional fouls which would put an opponent at a disadvantage. With "cue ball in hand," the player may use a hand or any part of a cue (including the tip) to position the cue ball. When placing the cue ball in position, any forward stroke motion contacting the cue ball will be a foul, if it is not a legal shot by full definition.

NOTE: There is a post below noting the WPBA website rules for a game called "Black Ball," this is a different game than 8 Ball. Look in the same site at the sidebar menu rules for 8 Ball are as above.

  3. If you play by world standardized rules (which all should) like BCA, then you can place the cue ball anywhere on the table and shoot any direction after a foul unless its the break shot, then its behind the head string.  If you play by lame bar league rules then the ball would be placed behind the head string and you can only shoot at balls outside of that line.  I have never played rules that said the ball has to be placed on the line, you can put it anywhere in the "kitchen" is what I've known it as.  Play ball in had rules, its a much much better game.  Good luck, and keep rackn em up!

  4. It   can   be   shot   from   anywhere   behind   the   line.   However   if  you   play   ball   in   hand   you  could   shoot   it   from   anywhere  on   table

  5. True eight ball rule says all fouls are ball in hand.

That means you can place the cue ball any where on the table you want.

  6. Everyone is close yes the ball has to placed on or behind the line the catch is you can only hit a ball that is on the otherside of the line unless you hit the ball across the line and have the ball come back over the line either by going down table off the rail and then back over the line to hit your ball or aim at side rail with lots of side english and s***w the ball back over the line to hit your ball so ya if your buddy scratches and your only ball is behind the line your snookered

  7. The cue ball can be placed anywhere behind the solid white line and can only be hit forwards.

  8. In Black Ball, here's the official ruling:

5.8 Cue Ball in Hand in Baulk

When the player has the cue ball in hand, he may place it by hand anywhere in baulk. The player may continue to adjust the position of the cue ball by hand until he takes a shot. The cue ball is not required to leave baulk before striking an object ball.

  9. No your friend is not right. League rules for many years have stated that the cue ball gets replaced anywhere behind the line and shot in any direction.

  10. It Depends on the rules you are playing.  Some rules you play ball in hand and you can place the ball anywhere you want and shoot any direction you want.  Usually bar rules you can place the ball anywhere behind the line and attempt any ball that is in front of the line, to play a ball behind the line the cue ball must contact atleast 1 rail past the line before the ball behind the line can be pocketed.

  11. The rules your friend wants to play under are bogus. I've never heard of putting the ball ON the line and only shooting forward. That's just stupid. Old fashion bar rules would have you put the cueball BEHIND the line and only shoot forward. That's almost as stupid as on the line. Why should you have to pay for his foul? There are still some tourneys that play cueball behind the line on a scratch or foul. But if your last ball is behind the line it is then spotted. at least that gives you a chance to win the game , but it's still not right. A scratch or foul should always be cueball in hand anywhere on the table. That is really the only fair way to play , period! A person should never ever get an advantage out of scratching. Your friend is just trying to take advantage of you or he just doesn't know any better. Either way he is totally wrong.

  12. your friend is wrong

  13. Whenever someone sinks the white ball(scratch), you must place it behind the baulk line, and shoot down table, meaning if you have a ball behind the baulk line while you have ball in hand, you cannot shoot it behind the line the white ball has to travel down the table.

  14. In regular 8 ball rules (not bar rules) you can place the cue ball anywhere on the table if you get a ball in hand.  The only time you put it behind the head string is if your opponent fouls off the break.

  15. the cue ball can be put anywhere behind the line or on the line, your friend is wrong.
