Question:

Question pertaining to "What Color Is Your Parachute?" tactic?

I'm vigorously on the job hunt, and recently read "What Color Is Your Parachute?"

For anyone out there who has read and applied the knowledge in this book, I am asking advice about 2 job hunting tactics I would like to try starting tomorrow.

The first involves the phone call method:

I was a graphic design major, but I would like to apply to all Communications field jobs, and I am wondering what kind of things I should say over the phone in order to try to get myself an interview.

The second involves the drop-by method:

I am also interesting in visiting places in person, as Bolles recommends, but again, I am not sure what to say/how to present myself.

I majored in graphics, but I am very interested in writing, and I am technologically savvy, have good research skills, and a lot of other skills I know I could employ, but how I get an employer to see me as someone with more than just a Graphics Degree?

  1. You've missed the point of the tactics advised.  You are not calling to ask for an interview - you're calling to ask for advice - "how would someone with my background break into the field of...", "would you be willing to critique my resume...", "what advice could you give to someone who wants to enter the field of..."  Offer to meet at a local Starbucks and buy them a coffee - you may wind up with an interview, but the intent of the meeting should be to get some free advice.

    Good luck.
